Watch What You Say!

When we become parents we have to make a lot of changes and adjustments. We don't get to sleep in (or at all) anymore. Dinners out are often put on hold until a sitter can be found or the kids are a bit older. Movies? Yay, right. Once you have children you realize the importance of a nice home theater set up and good Internet connection. There are LOTS of things that change, and as your baby becomes a toddler your language is one of the big ones. Only when you hear your little one parrot back the expletive filled tirade directed at another driver, do you fully realize how much of a potty mouth you really have. Of course some of you perfect parents out there are thinking I have NO idea what you're talking about. You lie. You know you do.

It's hard to hold your tongue sometimes. There are times that call for, as Kirk explained  to Spock, colourful language. Those times are not going to magically disappear because you now have kids, in fact they are probably going to increase. To help you vent those frustrations without actually swearing, here are some useful substitutions for common words that are not child friendly. You're welcome!

  1. Shatner instead of Sh*t. As in: "Holy Shatner! I think I just saw something on the wing of the plane!"
  2. Frak instead of F#*k. As in: "What the Frak were you thinking sticking a fork in the toaster!?"
  3. Gorram instead of G0D D@mn. As in, "Where are my Gorram car keys?"
  4. Smeg. It kind of means it's own thing, so it's very versatile. For example. "What the smeg? You are a total smegging smeghead!" Have fun with this one. Get creative!
  5. Belgium. Well, if I need to explain this one we don't know each other very well.
  6. Smurf. For when a little blue language is what's required.
  7. Zarquon. Only use this when you don't mind looking like a total nerd.
  8. Shazbot. A good substitute for SOB. Again, kinda makes you sound like a nerd when used.
Use these words well and may peace be with you. If not, well, just use these words well.

FYI: I'm Not Dead

It was pointed out to me a few days ago that I haven't written about anything in quite a while. That's probably an understatement. I think my last post was on January 26th and it's now February 16th. Or is it the 17th?  I'm not sure anymore. The fact of the matter is that I haven't abandoned my blog in any way.  I've just put it on the back burner for the moment. Why? Because I live at ground zero right now. Everyone in this house has been sick, to a greater or lesser extent, since before Christmas.

I'm tired.  I usually don't get sick myself, and I count myself lucky that when I do it passes quickly. We're also lucky that no one has gotten seriously ill.  Right now everyone is feverish and have varying degrees of bronchitis. No pneumonia. No trips to the doctors. So I'm thankful for that.

What it lacks in seriousness it more than makes up for in persistence. It totally wears you down! Every one's nose is red and raw. Our throats and chests hurt from near constant coughing. We're tired and haven't been sleeping well, if at all. The fevers just keep returning, again and again.  Everyone is sick so there's no one to pass the ball to.  We just have to wait it out and hope that at least some of us start feeling better soon. We are SOOOOO done with this! Seriously. I want a prize at the end and it better not be some dumb t-shirt that says "I was sick and all I got was this dumb t-shirt". That's not even funny or ironic.  Just dumb.

So to sum up. Not dead. (yet) Just taking a break until we are well. Plus we've been all stuck inside for EVER so there isn't anything to write about anyways. Of course you could wait a few weeks. If we're all still sick it might take a Shining turn. Miss. A does a mean "red rum" imitation. It's pretty frightening, really.

PS, I just spell checked and got "pneumonia" right on the first try. Score one for me! Things are looking better already. Of course it could just be a new syptom presenting. Paging Dr. House...

Your Kids and Technology

Now let me be up front from the beginning. I'm not rocking the newest tech by any means. I hardly use my cell phone. In fact I bet you ten bucks (Canadian admittedly), that it isn't even charged right now. I don't own a watch. Our family didn't even get a computer until my first year of university. The idea of ten year olds texting just blows my mind. However, I know that a lot of families have a more personal relationship with technology than our family did.

In contrast, my husbands family always had some sort of to media related technology in their home. His father worked for the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) and was always bringing his work home with him. They watched National Film Board movies on a movie projector. When laser discs came out...hold on I'm stifling a laugh here...they were one of the first to be watching them. He was playing with a Comodore 64 while I was trying to set my digital watch. Tech has been a part of his life as much as it hasn't been a part of mine.

For our part, technology does play a part in our kid's lives, but a limited part. I've felt that there was plenty of time to become familiar with it later. Like I mentioned, it wasn't really apart of my life and I've been no worse for wear for it. We rented VCRs for our birthdays! That's how far from technology my family was. I can not overstate that enough. Apparently. I would much rather my daughter learn to put a wooden puzzle together than a virtual one on the iPad. I perfer colouring with crayons than with a fill tool. For me it's more than just the act. It's more social and interactive to do these things for real. When Miss. A was young she would just tune out the rest of the world if she was fiddling with the iPad. You could try talking to her, but she was really immersed in what she was doing. Whereas puzzles, games, colouring, and other activities in person were much more social and interactive. We would talk about what we were doing and spending lots of quality time together.

That being said, she does LOVE the iPad! She can navigate through it like an expert. In fact she has a better idea how to do things on it than I do. Her favorite game currently is Tiger Woods Golf. She is good at that game. Better than me and better than her dad. I always end up in the sand trap. As much as she does love it, and TV and movies, it's a sometimes treat. It's too easy for her to feel some sort of sense of entitlement to these things. Other children may have a different relationship. We find it is much too easy for the negotiation of its use to turn into a battlefield. Perhaps with time and maturity this will change, but for now it stands as it is.

When do you feel it's a good idea to introduce technology into your children's lives? It's obviously going to be a big part of their future everyday. What kind of technology is appropriate and at what age, and for how long? What sort of rules and restrictions should there be? It seems like a complicated Pandora's box once it's opened.

Go Take a Hike

Today was spent indulging two of my husband's favorite things: hiking and photography! Wow, it must be nice to have such interesting hobbies. I really must look into getting one myself. We were daring in that we left around lunch time and nap time for our youngest little adventurer. Not to fret, however, we are seasoned professionals! We loaded ourselves up with plenty of food and crossed our fingers that nap time wouldn't be a big issue. It wasn't, thankfully, and much fun was had by all. We trekked for about an hour and a half. (mental note: next time more ankle support!) Miss. A LOVED it! She has an amazing amount of energy! Baby K always loves getting outside and being a part of the action. She's just fascinated by everything. I, well, I probably needed the exercise.

My husband, Scott, is a wonderful photographer! He really enjoys it, and it shows in his work. The kids are some of his favorite subjects. Miss. A loves to be the center of attention, so she really gets into it. I'm sure Baby Kwill quickly follow! He also loves the great outdoors. Much of the time spent at the cottage is hunting for the perfect shot.

It was a lovely day out with the kiddies! We saw deer, squirrels, toads, butterflies, and lots of different birds. Ok, maybe the deer was the most exciting thing, but if you're three years old and under it's practically an African safari. Scott took many a photo, I even took a couple myself. If you get a chance you should check out his Flickr site.
